1. Anti-inflammatories
Anti-inflammatory drugs are the first line of treatment for back pain, since in addition to the anti-inflammatory effect, they have an analgesic effect, relieving discomfort more quickly.
The indication of anti-inflammatory drugs may vary according to the cause of the pain in the spine, since these drugs may have a more or less strong action and, therefore, different doses and duration of use can be guided according to with the cause.
Examples: ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac or celecoxib, for example.
2. Analgesics
Analgesics can also be indicated in the treatment of back pain, as they are capable of promoting pain relief. It is important that the analgesic is used as directed by the doctor, as its prolonged use in higher doses can cause damage to the stomach lining and liver.
For pregnant and breastfeeding women, paracetamol is usually recommended as it is considered safe during these phases, however it is important to consult a doctor.
Examples: paracetamol, dipyrone, acetylsalicylic acid and metamizole.
3. Muscle relaxants
Muscle relaxants are a good option for back pain, especially in cases where there is muscle spasm that results in pain, and their use is not recommended for prevention.
It is important to only use muscle relaxants when indicated by the doctor, because their use without guidance or for a long time can be addictive.
Examples: thiocolchicoside, cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride and diazepam, which may also be marketed in combination with analgesics to help relax muscle and reduce pain.
4. Opioids
Opioids can also be indicated in case of back pain, as they provide short-term relief, however it is associated with several side effects and, therefore, it is important to be careful about its prolonged use.
In case of severe pain, the doctor may recommend the use of codeine or tramadol, which are prescribed when the pain is more severe, however, in more severe cases, the use of stronger opioids may be recommended for a short time.
Examples: codeine, tramadol, hydromorphone, oxycodone, and fentanyl.
5. Antidepressants
Antidepressants may be indicated in cases of chronic back pain, as they have a positive effect on pain, being mainly recommended in cases of chronic low back pain.
The antidepressants that have been used to relieve back pain are the norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake inhibitors and the tricyclic antidepressants. These drugs are contraindicated in cases of renal failure, glaucoma, pregnancy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure and should only be used under medical prescription.
Examples: venlafaxine, duloxetine, sibutramine, imipramine, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, and clomipramine.
6. Cortisone injections
Cortisone injection is usually indicated when drug treatment is not enough to relieve pain, and the injection may be recommended by the doctor according to the cause and intensity of the pain in the spine.
Home remedies for back pain
An excellent home remedy for back pain is to make a hot compress, as the heat relaxes the muscles and activates blood circulation in the region, reducing pain.
Another natural solution to complement the treatment of back pain is ginger tea or compress, due to its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and vasodilating properties.
To make the tea, place about 3 cm of ginger root in 1 cup of water and let it boil for 5 minutes, then strain, let it cool and drink it up to 3 times a day. To make the ginger compress, just grate the same amount of ginger and apply it to the back area, covering it with a gauze, for 20 minutes.
Tips to relieve back pain
Other tips for relieving back pain include:
- Rest, in the lying position and belly up, with the legs stretched out, slightly raised, without a pillow on the head and with the arms extended along the body;
- Take a hot bath, letting the water fall on the pain site;
- Get a back massage.
