The pennyroyal is a medicinal plant with digestive, expectorant and antiseptic properties, being mainly used to help treat colds and flu and improve digestion.

This plant is very aromatic, being often found in humid places, along rivers or streams. Pennyroyal has an intense and penetrating aroma, as it is astringent, it contracts the tissues and tends to dry the mucous membranes, when in contact with the mouth it can produce a sensation of harshness.

Its scientific name is Mentha Pulegium and it can be purchased at natural food stores, street markets or compounding pharmacies.

What is it for

The properties of pennyroyal include its digestive, stimulant, stomach tonic, sudorific, astringent, emmenagogue, febrifuge, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, carminative, vermifuge and antiseptic action and, therefore, it could be used in different situations, for example:

  • Fighting cold and flu;
  • Relieve cough;
  • Fighting lack of appetite;
  • Improve digestion and relieve symptoms of poor digestion;
  • Reduce the symptoms of heartburn;
  • Fighting intestinal parasites;
  • Relieve fever.

Furthermore, it has been shown that pennyroyal essential oil could serve as a pesticide, and could also be useful in controlling the growth of fungi, bacteria and parasites in plants, for example.

Despite the various indications, pennyroyal should only be used under the advice of a doctor or herbalist and should not replace the indicated treatment, being only a complement.

How to consume

Penyroyal can be consumed in the form of tea, which can be made with its leaves, stems and flowers, but it can also be used in cooking to season savory dishes, such as fish dishes, a├žorda, infusion, liqueur, flavored oil, in meat dishes, and also sweet dishes, such as pudding, pie, jam and fruit salad.

To make pennyroyal tea, just put 10 grams of leaves in a pan and cover with 200 ml of boiling water. Smother until lukewarm, strain and then drink. Drink 2 to 3 cups a day.

The crushed leaves can be used to apply to wounds because it acts as a refreshing and antiseptic. The crushed leaves act as a natural repellent, keeping away flies, mosquitoes, ants and moths.

Side effects and contraindications

The side effects of pennyroyal are related to consumption in high amounts, which can result in mild symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, and more severe symptoms such as seizures, liver changes, respiratory changes and abortion, when consumed early in pregnancy.

Penyroyal is contraindicated for children under 12 years old, pregnant women and people with kidney problems.
