Luftal (simethicone): what is it for and how to take it

Luftal is a remedy that contains simethicone in its composition, indicated for the relief of excess gas in the stomach or intestine, as it acts by breaking the bubbles that retain the gases, facilitating their elimination and helping to relieve discomfort., pain and pressure in the belly caused by excess gas. In addition, this medication can also be used in the preparation of exams such as digestive endoscopy or colonoscopy.

Luftal is available in pharmacies and drugstores, found in the form of tablets, solution in drops or gelatinous capsules, administered orally, and should be used with medical advice, especially for babies and children.

What is it for

Luftal is used to relieve symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, increased abdominal volume, pain and cramps in the abdomen, because it helps to eliminate the gases that cause these discomforts.

In addition, it can also be used as an auxiliary medication to prepare patients for medical examinations, such as digestive endoscopy or colonoscopy.

How it works

Simethicone works in the stomach and intestines, decreasing the surface tension of digestive fluids and causing the bubbles to burst and preventing the formation of larger bubbles, allowing them to be eliminated more easily, resulting in the relief of symptoms associated with gas retention.

How to use

Dosage depends on the pharmaceutical form to be used:

1. Luftal drops 75 mg/mL

Luftal drops can be used by adults, babies and children, and the dose varies with age:

  • Infants: 3 to 5 drops orally, up to 3 times a day;
  • Children up to 12 years: 5 to 10 drops orally, up to 3 times a day;
  • Adults and children over 12 years: 13 drops orally, up to 3 times a day.

To give the dose to the baby or child, you can mix simethicone with water, baby formula or other foods to make swallowing easier.
