Recurrent candidiasis is characterized by the occurrence of 4 or more episodes of Candida infection in the same year. This type of candidiasis can also be known as recurrent or chronic candidiasis.

Normally, candidiasis becomes chronic when its cause is not eliminated, being a common situation in cases of weakening of the immune system or when treatment is not carried out correctly.

Candidiasis occurs in both women and men and can cause symptoms in the genital region, but also in the mouth and even in the intestines. In the presence of symptoms suggestive of candidiasis, especially if they are recurrent, it is important to consult a general practitioner, gynecologist or urologist, to initiate the most appropriate treatment.

Main symptoms

The symptoms of recurrent candidiasis are the same as for common candidiasis, with the difference that recurrent candidiasis episodes occur at least 4 times a year.

The main signs and symptoms of candidiasis are:

  • Irritation and itching in the genital area;
  • Pain during intimate contact;
  • White discharge;
  • White plaques on the penis.

In the presence of signs and symptoms of candidiasis, it is important that the doctor is consulted so that an evaluation of the symptoms is carried out and, thus, it is possible to carry out tests that confirm the infection and start treatment. Learn more about the symptoms of genital thrush.

Causes of repeat candidiasis

Recurrent candidiasis is more common in people who have a more compromised immune system or who have not properly treated candidiasis.However, there are also other factors that can increase the risk of developing recurrent candidiasis, such as:

  • Excessive stress;
  • Decompensated diabetes;
  • Diet rich in sugar;
  • Inadequate intimate hygiene;
  • Recurrent use of antibiotics.

In addition, wearing synthetic fabric or very tight underwear can also favor the proliferation of the Candida fungus, leading to the repetitive appearance of candidiasis. See more about the causes of candidiasis.

Chronic candidiasis in pregnancy

Chronic candidiasis is relatively common in pregnancy due to hormonal changes during this period, which interfere with the proper functioning of the immune system and the pH of the vagina, making it easier for candidiasis to develop.

Treatment for chronic candidiasis in pregnancy should be started as soon as possible under the advice of the gynecologist and obstetrician, in order to avoid transmission to the baby during delivery.

How the treatment is done

Treatment for recurrent candidiasis should be done with the guidance of a doctor, since before starting to use any medication it is important to perform an antifungigram. This test aims to identify which drugs Candida is sensitive to, making it easier to choose the most appropriate drug.

In general, the use of oral Fluconazole for about 6 months is indicated, however other antimicrobials can be indicated both in the oral form and in the form of ointments or creams.

It is important that the treatment is carried out according to the doctor's recommendation, even if the symptoms have disappeared a few days after the beginning of the treatment, because this way it is possible to guarantee the fight against the fungi that are in excess, preventing the symptoms from of candidiasis reappear.

Care during treatment

In addition to the use of medication prescribed by the doctor, and to ensure the success of the treatment, it is also important to adopt some precautions, such as:

  • Reduce the consumption of sweets, as sugar favors the growth of the fungus;
  • Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight and made of synthetic fabric;
  • Perform the hygiene of the intimate region properly;
  • Dry the intimate area well;
  • Practice regular physical activities.

During the evaluation of symptoms by the doctor, the triggering factor of recurrent candidiasis is also taken into account, so that other specific care for the cause may be indicated. See more details of treatment for candidiasis.

Natural treatment

A natural treatment option for candidiasis is the bicarbonate sitz bath, as it promotes the pH balance of the vagina, preventing the proliferation of Candida sp species. See how the natural treatment for candidiasis is done.
