Echinacea purpurea is a herbal medicine, made with the plant Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench, which helps to increase the body's defenses, preventing and fighting the onset of colds, for example.

This remedy is taken orally, being most effective when taken from the onset of the first symptoms of the infection. Normally, the recommended dose is 2 capsules a day or as directed by a physician.

How to take it

  • 1 to 3 hard gelatin capsules daily,

The pills and capsules should not be broken, opened or chewed and the treatment with this remedy should not be done for a period longer than 8 weeks, as the immunostimulating effect may reduce with prolonged use.

Possible side effects

Side effects can be transient fever and gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting and unpleasant taste in the mouth after taking it. Various allergic reactions may also occur, such as itching and worsening of asthma attacks.

When not to take

Echinacea purpura is contraindicated in patients allergic to plants of the Asteraceae family, with multiple sclerosis, asthma, collagenosis, HIV positive or tuberculosis.

This remedy is also contraindicated for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 12 years old.
