Marijuana, also known as marijuana, is obtained from a plant with the scientific name Cannabis sativa, which has in its composition several substances, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), with psychoactive effects such as feeling of euphoria, relaxation and a sense of well-being, which is what leads to recreational marijuana use.

Some studies show that the use of marijuana can provide several therapeutic benefits and, therefore, its active substances, mainly CBD, are used in medicine for the treatment of multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, depression or chronic pain caused by arthritis or fibromyalgia, for example.

The consumption of marijuana is prohibited in Brazil, however, in some cases, CBD can be used for therapeutic purposes, with specific authorization.

What are the benefits of marijuana

In recent years, studies have shown several therapeutic properties of substances present in marijuana, especially CBD, which despite having a similar structure to THC, does not cause as much euphoria and has fewer side effects than THC. Therefore, CBD has been adopted as a pharmacological option in some countries.

Although they are not yet widely used, the components of marijuana have been used in medicine for various he alth problems such as:

  • Relief of chronic pain caused by arthritis, fibromyalgia or migraine;
  • Decreased inflammation in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, Chron's disease or rheumatoid arthritis;
  • Relief of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy;
  • Appetite stimulant in patients with AIDS or cancer;
  • Treatment of seizures in people with epilepsy;
  • Treatment of muscle stiffness and neuropathic pain in people with multiple sclerosis;
  • Analgesic in terminally ill cancer patients;
  • Treatment of obesity;
  • Treatment of anxiety and depression;
  • Decreased intraocular pressure, useful in cases of glaucoma;
  • Antitumor activity.

In Brazil, there is only one drug with CBD authorized for commercialization, sold with a prescription, with the commercial name Mevatyl, which also has another substance added, THC, being indicated for the treatment of muscle spasms in people with multiple sclerosis. See all CBD indications.

In addition, it is also possible to import other medicines with this substance, with the proper authorization.

Effects of Marijuana

The substances in marijuana, CBD and THC, act as neurotransmitters by binding to structures in nerve cells, called cannabinoid receptors, causing analgesic, anti-inflammatory or neuroprotective effects.
