The white spot on the nail is a sign that there is a change in the structure of the nail, which can be caused by a nutritional deficiency, allergies or minor bumps. These spots are also known as leukonychia and are usually not related to any disease.

White nail spots can appear on both toenails and fingernails and are generally not a cause for concern. However, if they appear frequently, they may indicate a lack of some essential nutrients such as calcium, zinc or vitamin B12, for example.

The white spot on the nail can be prevented and treated according to the dermatologist's guidelines, and it is generally recommended that the person maintain a good diet and hydration.

Main causes

The main causes for the appearance of white spots on nails are:

  • Allergy to substances, such as nail polish or cleaning products, for example;
  • Nutritional deficiencies, such as lack of calcium, iron, zinc, silicon, folic acid or vitamin B12, due to poor diet;
  • Small trauma to the nail,such as getting your finger stuck somewhere or suffering some damage to the manicure;
  • Use of sulfonamide antibiotics, such as bactrim, for example;
  • Some medical treatments, such as chemotherapy;
  • Hormonal variations in women;
  • Presence of some diseases, such as anemia, psoriasis, vitiligo, tuberculosis, kidney disease, ringworm, liver cirrhosis, congestive heart failure, and diabetes;
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, especially cold weather.

In addition to these factors, white spots on nails can also be a genetic problem, affecting a large area of ​​the nail, called total leukonychia.

How to treat white spot on nail

In general, white spots on the nail disappear spontaneously, without any treatment, however, there are some methods that help to remove white spots from the nail or prevent their appearance.

So, in the case of women who paint their nails, they should remove the nail polish well before painting their nails again and hydrate them well. In addition, protective gloves must be used when using products that can cause allergies, such as cleaning products, dishwashing products, among others.

It is also very important to have a good diet in order to avoid the lack of minerals that are important for the maintenance of he althy nails such as calcium, found in foods such as milk and grains; iron, present in red meats and strawberries; zinc, present in almonds and turkey; vitamin B12 found in salmon and shellfish; and folic acid, present in lentils and spinach, for example.

Home treatment

A good way to reduce white spots on nails, in addition to making them stronger and more beautiful, is to apply a mixture of oils, which is prepared as follows:


  • 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil;
  • 1 teaspoon apricot seed oil;
  • 1 teaspoon almond oil;
  • 1 400 IU capsule of vitamin E oil.

Preparation mode

Mix the oils in a bottle, shake well and then massage several drops of the mixture into the nails and cuticles. The ideal is that the mixture is placed preferably 2 times a day, both in the morning and at night.
