Mineral oil is a colorless greasy substance, obtained by refining petroleum, which has moisturizing properties for the skin.

In pharmacies this oil can also be known as vaseline or liquid paraffin, and is sold for medicinal use, due to its laxative properties that help in cleaning the intestines, helping to treat constipation.

This oil can be applied directly to the skin or mixed with creams or hair products, for example, so that it is possible to increase its absorption and guarantee other benefits. Mineral oil is a very versatile product that can be found in pharmacies. However, despite being considered safe, it is important that before starting its application, the doctor is consulted.

1. Moisturizes the skin

Due to its moisturizing properties, mineral oil is ideal for moisturizing dry or cold-sensitive skin. It is especially effective in the treatment of very dry skin, due to its ability to retain water and nourish the skin quickly and effectively. Mineral oil is included in the composition of the vast majority of beauty products, such as makeup, creams or products to hydrate the skin, due to its high moisturizing power.

How to use: The oil can be applied neat, directly to the skin, or mixed with a moisturizing cream, for example, to increase its absorption. The oil should only be applied to intact skin, where there are no open wounds or any signs of infection.

2. Soothes the skin in cases of burns

In cases of sunburn, mineral oil is a great resource to hydrate and soothe the skin, helping to relieve the symptoms of discomfort, redness, dryness and burning that arise after excessive exposure to the sun.

In addition, mineral oil is also ideal for soothing diaper rash, which is common in babies. In these cases, it is recommended to use mineral oil for baby without perfume and without alcohol, to avoid the appearance of allergic skin reactions.

How to use: apply to skin 2-3 times a day and allow to air dry.

3. Nail polish dryer

Mineral oil can also be used as a nail polish drier, preventing dirt from sticking to the nail polish, while promoting good hydration for dry cuticles. In addition, this oil is often present in the composition of conventional nail drying oils of some well-known brands.

How to use: Put the mineral oil in a spray bottle and then gently spray it on your painted nails, with a distance of 15 cm from your hands.

4. Acts as a makeup remover

Mineral oil helps remove makeup, effectively removing impurities from the face and eyes, while leaving the skin well hydrated.

How to use: just put a few drops on a cotton pad and apply all over the face, then wash the entire region with water and neutral soap.

5. Moisturizes dry hair

Mineral oil also serves to moisturize dry and brittle hair, providing shine and softness to the strands. However, it is recommended that it be used only once a week, so as not to leave the hair oily and contribute to the appearance of scalp flaking.

How to use: apply a few drops to damp hair after showering, especially along the length of the strands, avoiding the root of the hair, letting it rest for 3 to 5 minutes minutes and use a soft bristle brush or wide-toothed comb for better absorption into the hair.

6. Stimulate bowel function

Mineral oil also has laxative properties, stimulating intestinal contractions and favoring the movement of stool, which helps to temporarily combat constipation.

How to use: to have the laxative effect, it is generally recommended to drink 1 tablespoon of mineral oil, which is equivalent to about 15 ml, in the period at night and then when you wake up. However, it is important that the doctor is consulted before ingesting any amount of the oil, so that the appropriate dose is recommended, as it can vary according to weight and age.
