Onion syrup with honey is an excellent homemade option to relieve coughs as it has expectorant properties that help decongest the airways, eliminating persistent cough and phlegm more quickly.
Onion contains quercetin, which can help fight the flu, cold, tonsillitis, cough, asthma and allergies naturally, while honey is considered an antiseptic, antioxidant and expectorant, helping to strengthen the immune system, fighting viruses and bacteria.
This onion syrup can be prepared at home, being useful against flu and cold in adults and children, however, it is not recommended for babies and children under 1 year, because of the contraindication of honey at this age due to the risk of botulism.
Onion Syrup with Honey and Lemon
- 3 onions;
- 3 tablespoons of honey;
- Juice of 3 lemons.
Grate the onion or put the onion in a food processor to remove only the water that comes out of the onion. The amount of honey that should be used should be exactly equal to the amount of water that came out of the onion. Then add the lemon and leave it in a closed glass container to rest for about 2 hours.

Cut the onion into 4 parts and put the onion to boil together with the water over low heat. Once cooked, the onion should be left to rest for about 1 hour, properly covered. Then you must strain the onion water and add the honey, mix very well. Store in a tightly closed glass container.
How to take it
Children should have 2 dessert spoons of the syrup during the day, while adults should have 4 dessert spoons. It can be taken every day, for 7 to 10 days.
However, despite having expectorant and antiseptic properties, homemade syrup should not replace the treatment indicated by the doctor, being only a complement. Discover other options for home remedies for cough.
