Guaco syrup is a herbal remedy indicated for the treatment of respiratory diseases, such as bronchitis or colds, as it contains the fluid extract of the medicinal plant Mikania glomerata Spreng in its composition, with expectorant and bronchodilator action, which helps to eliminate phlegm, fighting cough.
This remedy can be found in pharmacies and drugstores, in bottles of 100, 120 or 150 mL, with the commercial names Syrup Expectorante de Guaco Natulab or Syrup de Guaco Herbarium, and can be used by adults or children over 2 years.
Despite being a herbal remedy, guaco syrup should be used with medical advice, as it can cause side effects such as increased blood pressure or intoxication in people with liver problems.

What is it for
Guaco syrup is indicated to fight respiratory problems such as flu, cold, sinusitis, rhinitis, bronchitis, cough with phlegm, asthma, whooping cough, sore throat, hoarseness.
This syrup can be used by children over 2 years old or adults, with medical advice.
How to take it
Guaco syrup must be taken orally, and it is important to shake the syrup bottle before use.
The normally recommended doses of the syrup depend on the amount of fluid guaco extract present in its composition, and include:
1. Guaco Syrup 35 mg/mL
Typically recommended doses of Guaco Natulab Expectorant Syrup 35 mg/mL depend on age and include:
- Adults: the normally recommended dose is 15 mL of 35 mg/mL guaco syrup, up to 3 times a day;
- Children over 2 years: the normally recommended dose is 15 mL of 35 mg/mL guaco syrup, up to 2 times a day.
It is important to follow the doctor's recommendations regarding doses and duration of treatment with guaco syrup.
Guaco Natulab Expectorant Syrup 35 mg/mL in a 100 mL bottle is valid for 3 days after opening and the 120 mL bottle for 4 days. The 150 mL one is valid for 5 days after opening. After these periods, what has not been used must be discarded.
2. Guaco Syrup 117, 6 mg/mL
The normally recommended doses of Guaco Natulab Expectorant Syrup 117, 6 mg/mL, are:
- Adults: the normally recommended dose is 15 mL of guaco syrup 117, 6 mg/mL, up to 3 times a day;
- Children over 5 years: the normally recommended dose is 7 mL of guaco syrup 117, 6 mg/mL, up to 3 times a day;
- Children between 2 and 5 years: the normally recommended dose is 5 mL of guaco syrup 117, 6 mg/mL, up to 3 times a day.
Guaco Natulab 117 Expectorant Syrup, 6 mg/mL in a 100 mL bottle is valid for 7 days after opening and the 120 mL bottle for 8 days. The 150 mL one is valid for 10 days after opening. After these periods, what has not been used must be discarded.
3. Guaco Syrup 0.5 mg/mL
The normally recommended doses of Guaco Herbarium Syrup 0.5 mg/mL are:
- Adults: the normally recommended dose is 5 mL of syrup, up to 3 times a day;
- Children over 5 years: the normally recommended dose is 2.5 mL of syrup, up to 3 times a day;
- Children between 2 and 4 years: the normally recommended dose is 2.5 mL, up to 2 times a day.
Guaco syrup must be used for 7 days, and in the most severe cases it can be used for up to 14 days, and should not be used for longer, according to medical advice.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects that may arise during treatment with guaco syrup are vomiting, diarrhea or increased blood pressure.
Furthermore, people who are allergic to the syrup may experience difficulty breathing and coughing.
Who should not use
Guaco syrup should not be used by children under 2 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or by people with chronic respiratory diseases.
In addition, guaco syrup should be used with caution by diabetics as it contains sugar.
Guaco syrup should also not be used by people who use anticoagulant drugs or the medicinal plant IpĂȘ Purple (Tabebuia avellanedae).
